Margarita RomanThis Women’s Health Month, Tapestry 360 Health is proud to highlight the story of one of our patients, Margarita Roman — a Chicago native, artist, musician, dancer, and advocate for holistic healing whose journey reflects the importance of compassionate, culturally connected healthcare for women.

Growing up in a Puerto Rican household, Margarita was introduced to natural healing practices at an early age. Her great-grandmother, who lived to be 106 years old, relied on herbs, fresh foods, movement, and mindfulness to care for herself and her community.

“My parents didn’t really go to doctors,” Margarita shared. “They went to the curandera — the woman who knew how to heal people naturally.”

Those traditions shaped the way Margarita approached wellness throughout her life. From herbal teas and meditation to movement and nutrition, she embraced a holistic lifestyle rooted in balance and listening to her body.

But like many women, Margarita also experienced moments where her pain and concerns were dismissed in healthcare settings. She recalled years of difficult menstrual pain, endometriosis symptoms, and medical experiences where she felt unheard or minimized.

“As a Latina and a senior citizen, sometimes people treat you differently,” she explained while reflecting on past healthcare experiences.

Those experiences reinforced why compassionate, patient-centered care matters — especially for women navigating chronic pain, hormonal changes, grief, stress, and major life transitions.

When Margarita began seeking care during the pandemic, she found herself drawn to integrative medicine and eventually connected with Tapestry 360 Health and Dr. Shah. What stood out most to her was simple but powerful: she felt listened to.

Over time, Margarita began incorporating acupuncture into her wellness journey after dealing with injuries and chronic back pain. She found that acupuncture helped support both physical healing and emotional well-being.

More recently, she participated in NADA ear acupuncture sessions at Tapestry 360 Health while coping with the emotional weight of losing her beloved dog of 14 years. Through acupuncture and guided meditation, she found a sense of peace and acceptance during a deeply difficult time.

“It gave me reassurance,” she shared. “I walked away feeling lighter, calmer, and more accepting of what I was going through.”

For Margarita, women’s health goes far beyond treating symptoms. It’s about honoring the connection between emotional health, physical wellness, movement, nutrition, stress, and healing.

Today, at 70 years old, Margarita continues to live an active, creative life filled with salsa dancing, table tennis, art, music, meditation, and movement — inspired by the women in her family who taught her the value of caring for herself holistically.

This Women’s Health Month, Tapestry 360 Health celebrates women like Margarita whose stories remind us that healing is personal, wellness is lifelong, and every woman deserves to feel heard, supported, and cared for.
