Medicare and Telehealth: What Patients Need to Know

Published On: Nov 7, 2025Categories: Articles, Health Tips, News

Telehealth coverage is changing — here’s what it means for you.

Telehealth services allow patients to connect with their healthcare providers through the internet or phone, offering a convenient and safe way to receive care. However, as of October 1, 2025, the federal government has made updates to Medicare telehealth coverage that affect many patients — particularly those with Medicare and dual eligibility.

At Tapestry 360 Health, we are committed to keeping our patients informed and supported through these changes.

What’s Changing

Due to recent federal updates, telehealth visits for Medicare and dual-eligible patients are no longer covered. This change follows the expiration of temporary policies introduced during the COVID-19 pandemic, which had expanded access to virtual care.

If you currently have a telehealth appointment scheduled, our team will reach out to help transition your visit to an in-person appointment at one of our clinics.

If you have any questions, please contact our Contact Center at (773) 751-7800.

A Look at Telehealth Coverage

Traditional Medicare

  • Telehealth services are covered only when provided by a Medicare-approved provider.
  • Services must be conducted from a qualifying originating site, such as a doctor’s office or hospital.
  • Audio-only telehealth visits are not covered for most services.

Medicare Advantage

  • Some plans may continue to offer broader telehealth coverage than traditional Medicare.
  • Patients are encouraged to check with their Medicare Advantage plan for details about their specific telehealth benefits.

What Ended on September 30, 2025

  • During the COVID-19 pandemic, Medicare expanded telehealth coverage to make care more accessible. These temporary expansions included:
  • Home-based telehealth visits
  • Audio-only appointments
  • Coverage for more types of providers

These temporary policies expired on September 30, 2025, returning Medicare coverage rules to their pre-pandemic structure.

What’s Next for Telehealth

While current coverage limits access for some patients, new legislation is being considered to make portions of the pandemic-era expansions permanent. Policymakers are reviewing ways to maintain virtual care access, particularly for rural and underserved communities.
